Monday First Things - Teachings of the Holy Fathers
8/7/19, 06:00 AM

“Human beings have accumulated in their coffers gold and silver, clothes more sumptuous than useful, diamonds and other objects that are evidence of war and tyranny; then a foolish arrogance hardens their hearts; for their brothers in distress, no pity. What utter blindness! . . . Attend not to the law of the strong but to the law of the Creator. Help nature to the best of your ability, honor the freedom of creation, protect your species from dishonor, come to its aids in sickness, rescue it from poverty …. Seek to distinguish yourself from others only in your generosity. Be like gods to the poor, imitating God’s mercy. Humanity has nothing so much in common with God as the ability to do good.”

We only have ONE CHANCE TO MAKE A FIRST IMPRESSION - and this is what our Greeter Ministry is all about: welcoming new people to St. Vladimir's, making them feel at home, being a resource for their questions, helping resolve any issues they have while at St. Vladimir's, and providing them a resource for more information in the future.

Please join us for a series of spiritual discussion this fall on Wednesday evenings following the weekly akathist for the ill. The topic of the discussions will be the Divine Services. We will go into some detail about the meaning, symbolism, and history of the Divine Liturgy and the other services we often participate in as Orthodox Christians. There will be a little “homework”, but not much – we promise. More soon to come, but please keep your Wednesday evenings free if you can beginning with the first Wednesday of October!

We all have friends and loved ones that we want to introduce to the Church. But some people are shy – they might not want to visit right away or talk to one of our priests. For this reason we have provide the resources on our Catechism Resources page: books, articles, videos, and audio files. Please share the link with friend and loved ones – and please feel free to access those resources for your own edification too!

Weekly Educational Offering - Prepare for the Coming Sunday!
3/7/19, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

We present here a short educational offering for both children and adults on the upcoming Sunday's principle Gospel reading so that all can better prepare for the Divine Services. Parents are asked to review the children’s portion with their children. It is very important for us to attend the Divine Services on Sundays and whenever else we are able, but in addition it is our spiritual responsibility to educate ourselves and our families in the faith. It is our hope that this mid-week offering will be an aid in this regard. Please contact Fr. Gregory with questions or suggestions.

For Adults: from the writings of Blessed Theophylact

For Children: from the Antiochian Archdiocese (various age groups)

You Are a Missionary
29/6/19, 06:00 AM

The Lord has entrusted us with the Pearl of Great Price – the Orthodox Faith. Are we hiding this? Are we keeping it for ourselves? Or are we following the example of the Apostles and working actively to spread our saving faith? If you had the cure for a bodily disease like cancer you would never keep that to yourself – it is obvious that this would be unethical and sinful. But we have the cure for DEATH! And sadly – we mostly keep it to ourselves. And that is even more unethical and sinful that hiding the cure for any bodily disease. Share your faith. Invite a friend, loved one, or neighbor to the All English Cycle of Services this coming Friday and Saturday – and assure them that you will be there to welcome them to St. Vladimir’s. If we would all do this – if we would make just a minimal effort to invite others – we would need to seriously rethink the size of the new church we plan to build because it would be way TOO SMALL. Let’s do that. Let’s make all our plans useless because there are just too many people in our parish family! Success only comes before work in the dictionary – let us get to work spreading our Orthodox Faith by simply inviting others to join us at St. Vladimir’s!

Non-Perishable Food Items Gathered at Every Service
28/6/19, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Beginning on Saturday, June 15 we provide our parishioners the opportunity to bring non-perishable food items to St. Vladimir’s at every Divine Service. The bin to deposit these is located between the two bathrooms in the foyer of the parish church. This is a great opportunity to teach our children the value of helping those in need – a value our Lord made it clear that we should fulfill in the 25th chapter of the Gospel of Matthew. It is also a great opportunity to remind ourselves of this important Christian precept. Our goal here is to change our St. Vladimir family paradigm to “I am going to church – I need to grab a non-perishable food item and bring it with me”. Let’s all work hard on that paradigm so that in a small way we are all working together to follow our Lord’s commandment “...Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto Me.”
