Small but Important Points from Hierarchal Visit
23/5/18, 12:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

During his archpastoral visit Vladyka asked Fr. Gregory to remind our parishioners that before receiving a blessing from a bishop they should make a small bow from the waist. This is minor on one hand, but the fact that Vladyka cares enough to point out this minor issue should show us his love for us as well as his trust in us. He sees us as a parish that will in the future receive hierarchal visitors from outside the diocese and wants us to be ready to welcome those visitors appropriately. We do not interact with bishops on a regular basis, and so such things can be easy to forget. We will remind you again before the visit of Metropolitan Jonah this July to celebrate St. Vladimirs Day.

Vladyka also noted that starting this Sunday prosphora will only be available from the kiosk at the end of the Divine Liturgy and not before: after all have kissed the cross and after the Royal Doors have been closed. Please make a note of this and prepare your children for this change as they are likely to be effected by it more than adults.

Weekly Educational Offering - Prepare for the Coming Sunday!
23/5/18, 06:00 AM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

We present here a short educational offering for both children and adults on the upcoming Sunday's principle Gospel reading so that all can better prepare for the Divine Services. Parents are asked to review the childrens portion with their children. It is very important for us to attend the Divine Services on Sundays and whenever else we are able, but in addition it is our spiritual responsibility to educate ourselves and our families in the faith. It is our hope that this mid-week offering will be an aid in this regard. Please contact Fr. Gregory with questions or suggestions.

For Adults: from the writings of St. John Chrysostom:

Archbishop Peter Thank You!
21/5/18, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

Thank you to all who made the visit of Archbishop Peter to our parish this weekend such a success! His Eminence joined us for Vigil on Saturday evening and Liturgy on Sunday morning. At the Liturgy on Sunday morning Mark Chaffee and Colin Bower were tonsured Readers for serve in our St. Vladimir Parish. Subdeacon Dmitry Kashchenko was ordained a Deacon to serve in our parish and Deacon Thomas Sprunger was ordained a priest to serve at the parish in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This was the first ordination of a priest in the history of our St. Vladimirs parish! So many people worked hard to make Vladykas visit so fruitful and we thank you all: those who sang, those who served, those who cooked, and everyone else who worked quietly behind the scenes for the glory of God! This was a real triumph for our parish thank you all! Many pictures are already up on our Facebook page. Eventually all will be posted on our photo album as well.

Devils take great delight in fullness, and drunkenness and bodily comfort. Fasting possesses great power and it works glorious things. To fast is to banquet with angels.

Scripture Reading for the Coming Week
20/5/18, 06:00 PM
Posted by Fr. Gregory

"This is the cause of all evils: the ignorance of the Scriptures. We go into battle without arms, and how ought we to come off safe?" -St. John Chrysostom, Homily IX on Colossians.

In order to help increase the general knowledge of scripture in our parish family we present here for your edification the scripture readings for the coming week. At least one Gospel Reading and one Epistle reading are assigned for each day of the year (although during Great Lent the readings are from the Old Testament). Hearing or reading only those readings appointed for Sunday merely scratches the surface of the great spiritual wealth that the scriptures provide us. Some of the readings are easily understandable others are less so. As Orthodox Christians we do not make private interpretation of scripture, but rather consult the fathers of the Church for their explanations to aid us in our understanding. Those wishing to have access to such explanations are asked to contact Fr. Gregory or inquire in the kiosk for further reading in this regard. Bibles may also be acquired in the kiosk.

Monday: Acts 17:1-15 & John 11:47-57
Tuesday: Acts 17:19-28 & John 12:19-36
Wednesday: Acts 18:22-28 & John 12:36-47
Thursday: Acts 1:1-12 & Luke 24:36-53
Friday: Acts 19:1-8 & John 14:1-11
Saturday: Acts 20:7-12 & John 14:10-21

Please find below several very nice articles on how to read the scripture from an Orthodox point of view.

By St. Justin (Popovich):

http://www.orthodoxinfo.com/phronema/bible_how.aspx

By Bishop Kalistos (Ware):

http://www.orthodoxinfo.com/phronema/ware_howto.aspx

This short article explains to us not just HOW to read the scriptures, but also what our goal should be in reading the scriptures. A short read and well worth it:

As noted in the article above we need God's help and blessing to read and understand the scriptures correctly. What better way to entreat God's help in this regard than through prayer? Please find the prayer before reading the scriptures here:
